11.04.04 Adding Vertices (Joints) to an Area Takeoff Object (Splitting a Segment)

In the previous article, we discussed resizing a relatively simple Area takeoff object. If you need to edit a more complex Area takeoff object, you must consider what happens to adjacent/connected segments.

Area takeoff objects are made up of individual segments, and just like Linear takeoff objects, those segments can be split in two using the Scissors tool . Sometimes, after you draw an area takeoff, you decide you need to split a segment in two - we use the scissors tool to do that.

To cut or "split" a segment in two,

  • Select the Area takeoff object whose segment you want to split
  • Press Ctrl+S on your keyboard
  • Click the segment where you want it split (you don't have to be precise, you can always drag the vertex along the segment to reposition it)
This adds a "vertex" where you clicked, breaking that longer segment in two.

Now, because adjusting one segment always affects connected segments, when you move this new vertex, the segments it connects are pulled with it.

If you wanted to pull a section of a wall out, parallel to the original segment, you have to add a total of four extra vertices.

You can add additional vertices to create multiple new segments.

Removing Unneeded Vertices
If you add a vertex accidentally, just click it and drag it to the next closest vertex. It turns red and then it is removed.
