18.01.05 Linking an Excel Cell to a Takeoff Result (Creating the Live Link)

Last Updated: 2023-07-27 09:23
Caution

The Live Link Add-in has been discontinued by ConstructConnect effective 6/1/2023 and can no longer be downloaded or installed. If you are already using Live Link, it will continue to function for some time, although we no longer provide support for this feature.

We encourage you to review the Related Articles at the bottom of this article on ways of exporting your takeoff results to Excel (and other formats).

In our spreadsheet shown below, we intend to create our Live Links in Column "F" (named "Result Qty, with the red arrow pointing to it).

CC Takeoff Excel Live Link

Linking a Cell to a Takeoff Item Result

To create the Live Link between a Cell and a Takeoff Item Result,

  1. Select the Takeoff Item whose Result you want to link to a cell. This populates the Takeoff Item Results section of the Live Link panel.
  2. Click the cell where you want to create a Live Link; in our example, we click on cell F2. (You can create a Live Link to multiple cells at once by selecting them using Ctrl or Shift and clicking, we cover that in the next article.)
  3. Next, double-click on the Takeoff Item Result you want linked to that cell.

You've now created a Live Link between this cell and the Takeoff data stored in the Cloud.

Cell comment showing linked Result

If you hover your mouse pointer on/over that cell, you see the Comment which includes the name of the Takeoff Item and the Result (Formula) to which the cell is linked.

You'll probably have to resize the Comment pop-up to see everything, Excel's default size is pretty small. You can see in the screenshot above that the pop-up preview of the Comment is cutting off the text. To see the entire comment, right-click on the cell and select "Show Comment" and then resize the comment box as needed. Check your Excel Help documentation for information on using and viewing Comments.

Note
Deleting the contents of the cell or typing over them does not remove the Live Link. The contents of the cell will update back to the Takeoff Result within a minute or so. You can link a cell to a different result, or you can "Unlink" a cell which deletes its Live Link to Takeoff (see Related Articles).
